Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)

Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) was created to try and build a network capable of high-speed data transfer as well as incorporating a fault tolerance within the system.

FDDI was initially produced as a standard by an ANSI committee during the mid 1980’s, later becoming an ISO standard.

Due to it’s speed and high fault tolerance, FDDI is typically used in mission-critical applications.

FDDI uses a token passing logical topology like Token Ring however FDDI differs from Token Ring because it consists of a dual ring structure of fibre optic cabling as opposed to copper based media.

The dual ring consists of a primary and secondary ring, the later used only for fault tolerance when the primary ring fails.

FDDI specifies the usage of multi-mode or single-mode optic fibre, the later capable of higher bandwidth and greater distance, but costing more than multi-mode fibre. Typically single-mode is used for intra-building connections.
