Ethernet Bridges

A bridge will allow you to break up your single Ethernet segment into two. A bridge works by only forwarding traffic across to the other segment if the destination node exists on that segment. Thereby keeping local traffic local.

Broadcast Domain - A set of stations in a network that will receive each other's broadcast frames. Bridges, Switches and Repeaters all propagate broadcast packets.

Bridges however forward all broadcast traffic and this is where routers can help us out. Routers, like switches break up collision domains, but they also break up broadcast domains. This however is not the main purpose of routers.
