Interior Gateway Routing Protocol, Cisco’s propriety distance-vector routing protocol was created to resolve some of the issues with RIP.
The hop count of IGRP is set as default to 100, but can be raised up to 255 eliminating the problem RIP had with routes greater than 15 hops.
IGRP also does away with the hop count metric and uses bandwidth and delay by default, a much better method for determining a path’s cost.
Cisco also improved on the load balancing capabilities of RIP by enabling IGRP to load balance upto 6 links with unequal cost.
The only downside to IGRP is that all your routers need to be Cisco routers.
