Administrative Distances

Administrative distances are the routers way of noting the trustworthiness of routes within it's routing table.

Administrative distances can vary from 0 to 255, 0 being the most trusted and 255 being the least. If a route has an administrative distance of 255 then the router will not route traffic via that route.

Each routing protocol has a default administrative distance associated with it. These are shown in the table below. Notice that a connected interface has an administrative distance of 0. This is fairly self explanatory, the router trusts networks which are directly connected. It also trusts static networks that are entered by administrators, giving them a default administrative distance of 1.
