Variable-Length Subnet Masks

Variable Length Subnet Masks (VLSM) allow you to have different subnet masks for different subnets, depending on your IP address requirements.
This can be especially useful for conserving IP addresses in situations where you only need a couple of IP addresses. An example being a serial link between two routers.
Variable-Length Subnet Masks and Routing Protocols
Variable Length Subnet Masks will only work with routing protocols that are classless and advertise subnet information. Protocols such as RIP version 2, EIGRP and OSPF are classless routing protocols.
