Like STP, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) uses two pairs of twisted wires insulated from one another, however unshielded twisted pair lacks the shield around the pairs of wires that STP offers. UTP instead relies on the cancellation effect produced by twisting of the wires to reduce cross talk between the pairs in UTP, and limit degradation in the signal caused by electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. This is now the most common type of Ethernet LAN media.

Cons
- More prone to EMI and RFI than STP
- Runs of over 100m require signal regeneration and retiming
