Troubleshooting and Configuring CDP

Networking Topics > Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) > Troubleshooting and Configuring CDP

There are a few Cisco IOS commands to help with troubleshooting and configuring CDP.

Disabling CDP

CDP by default is enabled on all interfaces, however you have the option of disabling CDP for the router as a whole or on a per interface basis.

To achieve this use the no cdp run IOS command to turn off CDP completely or the no cdp enable command to disable CDP on a particular interface. You can check that the changes you've made have taken effect by using the show cdp interface command.

This will provide you with the CDP timer and holdtime as well as the encapsulation and interface status.

You will need to be in the config-if configuration mode to run this command.

CDP Timer and CDP Holdtime

To change the default CDP timer (60 seconds) and CDP holdtime (180 seconds) use the cdp timer, cdp holdtime IOS config commands respectively. You can verify the changes you've made by using show cdp, which will show you the current devices' CDP setting.
