Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a proprietary Cisco protocol designed to help administrators troubleshoot a Cisco network. CDP has a large installed base on many Cisco products including routers and switches using Cisco's IOS operating system (IOS).
CDP is used to gather information about neighbouring devices. It is enabled by default on Cisco IOS. CDP can only see directly connected devices and is not able to see beyond those devices.
CDP packets are transmitted out of every interface at 60 second intervals by default. CDP neighbour information is flushed after 180 seconds if no CDP updates are received for a device.
To view CDP information about neighbouring devices use the show cdp neighbor command or the show cdp neighbor detail command for more detailed information. Note that show cdp entry * provides the same information as show cdp neigbor detail.
