Hubs

Networking Topics > Layer 1 Physical > Hubs

Hubs are very similar to repeaters, often called multi-port repeaters, they are classified as layer 1 devices because they only look at the data passing through them at bit level.
Generally hubs regenerate and retime the signals, like repeaters, however hubs differ from repeaters in that they allow many hosts to connect to them.

In doing so hubs become the central point in a network segment where hosts connect, this layout is referred to as a star topology, and this helps increase the reliability of the network, since if one cable breaks only one host will be affected.
